Terceira – an island that is unique even within the Azorean landscape – leaves its mark on everyone who visits, not only for its distinctive natural beauty but especially for its rich history and heritage, which have shaped a courageous people who are nonetheless friendly and vibrant. It’s no coincidence that people say the Azores have 8 islands and 1 amusement park.

Angra do Heroísmo – the city where Quinta do Abacate is located – has a particularly rich history. The corners of this picturesque and peaceful city are marked by buildings and sites that evoke memories of past eras, such as the Castle of São João Baptista, commissioned by Philip I of Portugal and II of Spain during the Iberian Union, and the Duke of Terceira Garden, a classical garden that stands as an emblem of the Romantic period in Portuguese history.

This history, shaped by different influences, crystallized into the vibrant culture of its people, who are renowned for their passion for celebration. One of these festivities is the famous Sanjoaninas, a multifaceted celebration where devotion to the popular saint, St. John, is shared with an almost fanatical enthusiasm for the traditional marches, as well as the more profane side of taverns and food stalls. This, along with many other events and cultural riches, earned Angra do Heroísmo its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Rising beside the city stands the imposing Monte Brasil. It is the remnant of a collapsed cone of an ancient extinct volcano, formed from the sea, consisting of a caldera surrounded by four peaks: Pico das Cruzinhas, Pico do Facho, Pico da Quebrada, and Pico do Zimbreiro. It also helps shape Angra Bay to the east and Fanal Bay to the west.
